RTP Grant :

In 2011 Whitefish Legacy Partners received the largest recreation trails project grant awarded by Montana State Parks. The matching $500,000 grant will fund three years of trail construction with the goal of connecting to the Whitefish Mountain Resort trails via USFS lands near Taylor Creek Road…thus putting the Whitefish Trail loop closer to completion.

A Trail Runs Through It

Directly outside downtown Whitefish, there is a trail that whisks walkers, runners, hikers, bikers and equestrians away through mile upon mile of public and private lands: it’s called the Whitefish Trail.

The cornerstone of Whitefish Legacy Partners’ works, the Trail acts as a portal into prime wildlife habitat, sweeping vistas, and mountainous recreational meccas. With current trails providing access to Lion Mountain, Beaver Lakes, Skyles Lake and Spencer Mountain; and future trail construction to include Swift and Lazy Creeks, Whitefish Mountain Resort and Haskill Basin, locals and visitors have a plethora of easy to locate and navigate recreational opportunities at their fingertips.

To date Whitefish Legacy Partners and the City of Whitefish has built 19 miles of natural-surface trail extending into the northern section of Beaver Lake.

The Whitefish Trail is comprised of stacked loops, scenic overlooks, buttery single-track trail and gated logging roads. The result of a collaboration between Whitefish Legacy Partners, the City of Whitefish, the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation, US Forest Service, Montana State Parks and private conservation and recreation champions, the Whitefish Trail demonstrates Whitefish Legacy Partners’ capacity for forging lasting and productive partnerships.

In 2012, another 3 miles of trail will be built, creating a northern access point to the Swift Creek area.
