December is off to a snowy start on the Whitefish Trail! Given upcoming temperature fluctuations and mixed precipitation, conditions will be hugely variable across the trail system. Traction devices are recommended on all trails. If icy puddles do develop, please do not walk around them as it widens the trail and damages surrounding vegetation. Hopefully we will get back on a snow trend for the foreseeable future, and the mud, puddles, and ice will become beautiful, snowy trails.
The following WT trailheads are plowed for winter access: Lion Mountain, Skyles, Beaver Lakes, Swift Creek, Reservoir, Big Mountain, and Holbrook Overlook. The DNRC Lower Whitefish Rd gate is closed as winter use has begun throughout the Stillwater State Forest.
If ski travel is your thing, enjoy the community Nordic trails accessed from the Big Mountain Trailhead. Check Glacier Nordic Club's website for updates on their grooming schedule and latest conditions and consider supporting GNC's grooming efforts. When out walking or snowshoeing on groomed trails, remember to stay to the side of the groomed track to protect the track for skiers.
As a reminder, please help us keep the trails clean and pick up your dog's waste.
Send your trail reports and photos to info@whitefishlegacy.org!
