Early April Whitefish Trail Report

This is an exciting time on the Whitefish Trail, as people emerge after winter and get back out on the trail. There's a sense of excitement; mountain bikes are pulled out of storage, and locals hit the trail after work thanks to the increasingly long days. The trails often seem to glow this time of year with the budding, soft, lime-green color of the larch needles.
Please be aware that many trails have scattered patches of snow in sheltered spots and some puddles depending on recent precipitation. We are still seeing freeze-thawing creating variable conditions of mud and wetness. Please remember to stay on the trail and not walk around the puddles. If your horse or bike is leaving ruts, please consider coming back on a drier day.
Trails at Lion, Skyles, Spencer, Lupfer, Beaver, Woods and Dollar are mostly dry with patches of mud and scattered puddles. The Lion Mountain Road to the Learning Pavilion is very muddy. Holbrook east still has patches of snow, but Holbrook west is snow free. Reservoir is snow free from the trailhead up to the cell tower. The Big Mountain Trailhead is still mostly snow covered.
If you come across any downed trees, please report them to info@whitefishlegacy.org. Enjoy the trail and don't forget to log your miles all month long throughout May!
Be Bear Aware. Spring is a great time to brush up on Bear Aware. Bring bear spray (and know how to use it), recreate in groups, avoid using earbuds, and keep dogs under control to discourage wildlife conflicts. Brush up on your bear aware knowledge at one of our upcoming free WT Education events!
As a reminder, please help us keep the trails clean and pick up your dog's waste.
Send your trail reports and photos to info@whitefishlegacy.org!
