Public Meeting May 10, 2012 – 6pm – Learn More & Share your Thoughts.

The City of Whitefish and the Whitefish Legacy Partners, a non-profit conservation organization, invite the general public to a meeting and open house from 6:00p.m. – 8:00p.m. on Thursday, May 10, 2012 at Grouse Mountain Lodge at 2 Fairway Drive in Whitefish, Mont.

The City of Whitefish and Whitefish Legacy Partners are seeking input to secure 2500 acres of land for public recreation and conservation in the Beaver, Skyles and Spencer Lake areas, as well as on the Whitefish Trail. The meeting will provide an update and overview of the Whitefish Trail, and seek public input from the community to guide the proposed conservation projects and the next phase of trail expansion. For those interested in a first-hand experience before the meeting, a guided hike on the Whitefish Trail with City of Whitefish Parks and Recreation Director Karl Cozad and Trail Construction Manager Greg Gunderson of Forestoration, Inc., will depart the Lion Mountain Trailhead at 4:00p.m.

Whitefish Legacy Partners’ planning efforts are designed to encompass community input to shape implementation strategies initiated in the Whitefish Neighborhood Plan adopted in 2004, impacting the 13,000 acres of School Trust Lands surrounding Whitefish. The Neighborhood Plan seeks to conserve trust lands and private lands providing open lands, recreation, clean water, wildlife habitat and view sheds, while generating revenue for the trust beneficiaries.

The Whitefish Trail offers 19 miles of natural surface trails located in a forested, rural environment popular for mountain biking, hiking and equestrian use; appropriate for families, outdoor enthusiasts, dog walkers, hard core bikers and runners of all abilities. The trail system officially opened in 2010 and offers the Whitefish community and visitors a stacked-loop recreation system comprised of single-track trails and gated logging roads. The trail is open year round for non-motorized recreational use.

The trail system is made possible through a collaborative effort with Whitefish Legacy Partners, City of Whitefish, Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation, Montana State Parks, a division of Fish, Wildlife and Parks, Flathead County, US Forest Service, private landowners, and many local volunteers.
