Summer Trail Report

The long, hot days of summer are here, when afternoon plans revolve around jumping into an ice-cold lake or locating the best huckleberry patches. It's also the season to celebrate the early mornings and shadier parts of the Whitefish Trail - and you'll get the added benefit of solitude during the early morning hours. The entire Whitefish Trail system is open and ready for your trail adventures with friends and family.

Serviceberries, buffaloberries, mountain ash berries, chokecherries, and wild raspberries are also ripening. If you are going out on the hunt for huckleberries, remember that the harvest slowly ripens over the next month as you climb in elevation. Another good reminder is to be Bear Aware - hike and pick with a friend or two and always carry bear spray. Happy berry picking!

Aftermath of a small wildfire at Lion Mountain

Thanks to DNRC and our local firefighters for fighting a small fire at Lion Mountain last week. Crews were able to put the fire out quickly and was contained at half an acre. It is an important reminder that although there are currently no official fire restrictions in place for Flathead County, fire danger is HIGH. The rain yesterday helped, but trail conditions continue to dry out as we head into a hot start to August.

Here's some helpful information as you plan your outdoor adventures throughout NW Montana and Flathead County.

  • Do not park or drive in dry grass or brush. A hot undercarriage can ignite a fire. Avoid backing into parking spots at trailheads.

  • Never discard cigarettes, matches, or smoking materials on the ground.

  • Make sure safety chains on your trailer are not dragging; chains can throw sparks and ignite roadside fires.

  • Make sure that your campfire is dead out. If it's hot to touch, it's too hot to leave!

  • Keep track of local fire conditions and respect restrictions. Click here for up-to-date fire information.

We hope you get out and enjoy our community trail system and consider a donation this summer to give back to the trail and open spaces you love!
